Numbers Introduction (6-8 weeks)
- All operations using number line (physically and visually)
- Place Value Introduction
- Number Games for Identifying Correct Operations; play games/ puzzles for inverse and identity
- Group Games for Multiplication (multi level worksheets)
- Group Games for Division (multi level worksheets)
- Play Games for distributive property
- Games for divisibility (PK Srinivasan Numberland)
- Based on student level, introduce decimal division (maybe do this after fraction is introduced)
- Introduce set theory with simple objects; and explain laws of computation based on this. Set of integers, set of whole numbers and set of natural numbers. Real numbers is the universal set (this does not include complex numbers)
Fraction manipulation (12 periods) – 2 weeks
The key is multi-level worksheets
- Making fractions
- Working with fraction strips (adding, equivalent fracions)
- Multiplication of fractions
- Subtraction of fractions
- Equal measure model of fractions
- Introduce division
Introduction to Decimals (6 periods) – 1 week
- Decimals represented as fractions
- Decimals represented on number line (using graph sheets/ drawn on playground etc)
- Decimal division (advanced topic) – No need to introduce if children not ready
Play with squares (6 periods)
- Make Squares (paper drawing)
- Make cubes (paper folding)
- For the same square, make the cube
- What are squares, what are cubes?
- Talk about area and volume
- What is the way to represent as symbols?
- Power of Ten – Explain orders of magnitude (what is a cm, m, km). Use video called Powers of Ten
Introduction of Rational Numbers (6 periods) 1-week
- Plotting on a number line (show that 1/3 = 10/30 = 100/300)
- Number between two numbers (integers, fractions, rational numbers)
- Recurring decimals -– No need to introduce if children not ready
Games
- Magic Square (simple 3x3)
- Visual Puzzles using various number operations/ simple geometry
- Cryparithms
What is to be skipped
- All the complex proofs on number theory
- Irrational numbers
