Objectives:

  1. To examine the changes around us
  2. To identify physical and chemical changes
  3. To identify and classify changes around us as Physical and chemical changes

Materials required:

Papers, scissor, candles, dough, clay, pen, Story: What can be reversed?

Reference links:

Science Activity book, Class 6 science text book

Content:

Physical change is a type of change where the physical properties of matter change. A change of state of matter, change in colour, odour, solubility, etc. all are examples of physical change. During a physical change, neither the composition nor the chemical nature of matter is changed.

Ex: An ice cube is placed in the sun. Later there is a puddle of water. Later still the puddle is gone.

A chemical change is a change of materials into another, new materials with different properties and one or more than one new substances are formed. It results when a substance combines with another to form a new substance.

Ex: Two chemicals are mixed together and gas is produced.

During burning of paper, ash is produced which is a new product.

Process:

  1. Demonstrate burning of paper, crushing paper, cutting paper, burning of a candle and molding of clay into different shapes. ask children to observe and record whether there was change in appearance? new product formed? reversible or irreversible for each of the reactions.
  2. Read the story 'What can be reversed?' for children. Ask children to
