Concept # Expansion

Learning objectives

  1. Heat causes matter to expand
  2. This is the basis for all thermometers

Notes for teachers

When heat is given to an object, the total thermal energy increases. This increases the kinetic energy (measured as temperature). The average kinetic energy increases and the molecular movement increases; causing matter to expand.

Activity No # Sand and Ring Experiment

Activity No # Bimetallic strip

*Estimated Time
40 minutes

*Materials/ Resources needed
Bimetallic strip, flame, computer, video of the expansion
*Prerequisites/Instructions, if any

See this video to see how a bimetallic strip works

*Website interactives/ links/ simulations

*Process (How to do the activity)

  1. Measure the bimetallic strip
  2. Heat the strip
  3. Measure again to examine the change

*Developmental Questions (What discussion questions)

  1. What do you think will happen to the strip?
  2. Which expands more you think?
  3. Why would that happen?
  4. What would that tell you about the metals?

*Evaluation (Questions for assessment of the child)

  1. List two examples where you have seen expansion of solids due to heat

*Question Corner

When you heat a metal sheet with a hole, does the hole expand?
