Concept # 1. Introduction to parallelograms

Learning objectives

  1. A 4-sided flat shape with straight sides where opposite sides are parallel.
  2. Also opposite sides are equal in length, and opposite angles are equal.
  3. Squares, Rectangles and Rhombuses are all Parallelograms.
  4. Properties of a parallelogram are :

a. Opposite sides parallel
b. Opposite sides equal
c. Diagonals bisect each other
d. Opposite angles congruent
e. Consecutive angles supplementary.

Activity No # 1. Introducing parallelograms

  • Estimated Time : 40 minutes.
  • Materials/ Resources needed:

Laptop, geogebra file, projector and a pointer.

  • Prerequisites/Instructions, if any:
  1. Knowledge of parallel lines, diagnols and angles.
  2. Basic figures like square, rectangle and rhombus.
  • Multimedia resources: Laptop
  • Website interactives/ links/ / Geogebra Applets
  • Process:
  1. The teacher can use this geogebra file to introduce parallelograms to students.
  2. She can move the vertices A or B or c and observe different parallelograms formed like square, rectangle and rhombus.
  3. Bring their attention to measures of sides, angles and diagnols.
  • Developmental Questions:
  1. Can you identify the figure ?
  2. How many sides does this figure have ?
  3. What do we call a figure with 4 sides ?
  4. Are all 4 sides equal ?
  5. What are parallel lines ?
  6. Identify the 2 sets of parallel lines.
  7. Spell out the differences between the figures formed with respect to sides, angles and diagnols.
  8. What common features do you observe in all figures/shapes formed ?
