We had applied for a book grant from the Tata Trust, under its ‘Parag reading program’ and have also purchased good and inexpensive story books in English, Kannada and Hindi published by the National Book Trust (NBT) and Children’s Book Trust (CBT) to create a mobile library in our office.
This mobile library was shared with the students in 'Back to school' camps and students were encouraged to pick up any book of their choice and read. Students were also encouraged to read in pairs or tell/ explain the story to a friend after they had finished reading. For some students, it was a novel experience, most enjoyed reading simply for its own sake.
Some activities that were part of this program:
Reading together
Reading by oneself
Discussing a story
Reading out aloud to a student
