The ‘Pick and Speak’ activity is designed to assess individually the speaking abilities of a child. Each child was asked to select a picture from a list of 12 pictures of everyday objects on the tab. They were asked to think for a minute and then respond in at least 3 sentences. Questions were related to their day-to-day life such as What do you like to do in your free time? Why?, What do you do every day before and after school?, Which is your favourite game, and how is it played?

Process: Part 1 :

The ‘Pick and Speak’ activity is designed to assess individually the speaking abilities of a child. Each child was asked to select a picture from a list of 12 pictures of everyday objects on the tab. They first had to click on the image and identify the object. If the child was able to identify the object, they were then asked to try and describe that object in both English and Kannada.

Part 2: Kannada Speaking (based on questions)

  • unable to articulate even a few words/phrases/sentences or finds it very difficult even with support of facilitator
  • able to speak only a few words but no full sentences.
  • able to speak upto 3 complete sentences (with or without pauses and minor errors)
  • able to speak more than 3 sentences without hesitation and with minimal mistakes
