Part 1 – Listening Comprehension
Play the listening comprehension audio clip for the student. Then ask the student to answer questions that follow. The audio clip and questions can be repeated once.
In case of any issue with the Audio Clip, you may read out the transcript.

Let me tell you about my dog. My dog’s name is Kuttan. Kuttan is a big black dog. He can run fast. He sleeps on a blue mat. We like to play in the garden.

Level 3 – Able to retain a majority or all the details (3 or 4 answers correct)
Part 2 – Reading
Ask the student to read the following passage.
If the student is able to read the passage on their own/ with some support, proceed to Part 3 (Reading and Speaking).
It is my first day at school. Mummy is holding my hand and walking with me.
“I am grown up now,” I say. “Let go, let go!” There are many children near the school. They come by bus. They come by car. They come by rickshaw. They cycle. They walk, like me. There are many new faces all around me. Mummy says, "Rani, I will be here when you come out." I leave her hand. She waves to me. I run inside. |

Level 7 – Able to read the full story with 4/5 mistakes or is able to read very slowly
Level 8 – Able to read the full story fluently without any hesitation and mistakes

Level 1 – Able to read less than 5 words
Level 2 – Able to read 5–8 words
Part 3 – Reading Comprehension & Speaking
Ask the student to answer the following questions based on the reading comprehension passage.
1. Ask student to explain meaning of words like hand, walking, faces.
2. Where is Rani going?
3. How do all the children come to school?
If the student is unable to answer right away, some word prompts can be used.
Rubric:
Level 0 – Unable to answer any of the questions even with prompts (in English or in mother tongue)
Level 1 – Able to explain meaning of words from the story in their mother tongue
Level 2 – Able to answer questions in some words or short phrases
Level 3 – Able to respond to questions in complete sentence(s)
Part 4 – Writing
Ask the student to draw their favourite animal and describe it in 3–4 lines.
Once completed, take a picture of their answer. The drawing and writing parts should be done on the same page to include both in the picture.
Rubric:
Level 0 – Unable to draw or write
Level 1 – Draws, but does not write anything
Level 2 – Draws & writes some letters or words;
Level 3 – Draws & writes words/ phrases not relevant to context
Level 4 – Draws & writes words or phrases/ sentence fragments relevant to context
Level 5 – Draws & writes contextually relevant 1-4 simple sentences
