=Concept # Expansion
Learning objectives
- Heat causes matter to expand
- This is the basis for all thermometers
Notes for teachers
When heat is given to an object, the total thermal energy increases. This increases the kinetic energy (measured as temperature). The average kinetic energy increases and the molecular movement increases; causing matter to expand.
