Teaching social science presents a unique opportunity to engage with the environment and the learner. A social science teacher thus has to move beyond the content areas and examine critically the processes of society, school and learning. Besides engaging with specific academic disciplines, a sensitive teacher should be able to see the social dimensions implicit in all academic disciplines - for example, the sociology of science, the role of gender in gender in mathematics learning or the connections between language and society. Content while often a context in all disciplinary areas, becomes even less important in social studies. Developing critical perspectives and building skills to engage with society meaningfully. A teacher to move beyond the content and critically examine her own world views and perspectives.
