Activity - Understanding quadratic equation geometrically

Process (How to do the activity)

  1. open the Geogebra file
    1. start with values of a=o, b=0, c=0
    2. change value of a to 1 (keeping b=0, c=0 and see what happens)
    3. change value of c to 1, 2, 3 etc (keeping a=1, b=0 and see what happens)
    4. change value of b to 1, 2, 3 etc (keeping a=1, c=0 and see what happens)
  2. In each of the above cases, discuss with students the meaning of the curve plotted and how the curve changes on change in values.

Developmental Questions (What discussion questions)

Distinction between linear equations and quadratic equations.

  1. When a=0, what happens?
  2. The quadratic equation graph is a distribution around x-axis. Can it be around y-axis? For it to be around y-axis how should the equation be?
  3. what does equal roots mean? with respect to distribution around x-axis?
  4. what does "c" represent?

Evaluation (Questions for assessment of the child)

Discuss the nature of the graph in case of the different values of a, b and c and understand

  1. Does a linear equation (can a linear equation) also have a constant?
