Complement game
I have, you need ಇಷ್ಟ್ ಇದೆ, ಎಷ್ಟ್ ಬೇಕು?
Objectives:
- Practicing complements of 10, 20, 100 which would be useful when performing any of the number operations
- Understand number relationships
- able to compare the complement of 10 to 100.
- able to recall the complement numbers for a fixed value.
Process :
1. The facilitator calls out a number and students respond with the complement of that number to get a sum of 10, 20, 100 or any other number.
2. The activity can also be done by making the children sit in a circle and each getting a chance to respond the yesht beku and call out the next number for isht ide
3. Students can be encouraged to use their fingers to figure out the answer if they are unable to do it quickly mentally
4. Students responses can be in chorus, individually in sequence, individually but randomly picked or picked among those who have raised hand.
5. This activity needs to be done regularly in class. About 5 minutes can be spent each day.
Incorporating inclusive strategies:
- Students can answer in their own pace.
- Students can make use of their fingers to answer if they find it difficult.
- Different groups can play with different numbers depending on their competency/comfort levels.
- Students responses can be in chorus, individually in sequence, individually but randomly picked or picked among those who have raised hand.
Procedure:
Complements of 10
Make small groups of 8-10 students in each group. The facilitator ask "ist ide" (say number 4) "yest beku"? to make a complement number 10, the students think and answer it as 6 to the facilitator. Now the same student will ask "ist ide" "yest beku" for the next student and the student will answer to his/her friend’s question. This process is repeated till each student gets a chance to pass the number. This process can be repeated until each child gets his turn for 3- 4 times .
Complement of 100
Make small groups of 8-10 students in each group. The facilitator ask "ist ide"(say number 30) "yest beku"? to make a complement number 100, the students think and answer it as 70 to the facilitator. Now the same student will ask "ist ide" (let say 80) "yest beku"? for the next student and the student will answer it as 20 to his/her friend’s question. This process is repeated till each student gets a chance to pass the number. This process can also be repeated until each child gets his turn for 3- 4 times.
Note: the facilitator should tell the student to ask the question only the multiple of 10.
Complement of 20:
Make small groups of 8-10 students in each group. The facilitator ask "ist ide"(say number 12) "yest beku"? to make a complement number 20, the students think and answer it as 8 to the facilitator. Now the same student will ask "ist ide" (let say 7) "yest beku"? for the next student and the student will answer it as 13 to his/her friend’s question. This process is repeated till each student gets a chance to pass the number. This process can also be repeated until each child gets his turn for 3- 4 times.
Note:
This complement game can be played for multiples of 5 till 50. However, the complements game can be played for any fixed number following the same process.
