Geography workshop/Sutradhar - 7th September, 2013

Exploring latitudes, longitudes, maps and atlases An interactive Geography workshop for primary and middle school teachers

Dear friends, Greetings from Sutradhar! We invite you to a 1-day interactive workshop on geography, to be held on Saturday, September 7th, 2013.

Why this workshop? Have you ever had trouble explaining to your students that the line wrapping around the earth is called the equator, or that the earth can be divided into latitudes and longitudes? If you have struggled to convey these abstract concepts then you are not alone. Many teachers find it a challenge to help students understand how to locate a place on a map or a globe. As latitudes and longitudes are imaginary lines, our understanding often remains blurred. Are there ways to overcome this problem? This workshop will address exactly that: help teachers understand the basic concepts of map reading, so that in turn they can teach these concepts more effectively. The content of the workshop: The workshop will offer two modules. In the first module, teachers will develop an understanding of latitudes and longitudes through engaging games and puzzles. Subsequently, they will work with maps and atlases and learn how to use them. The workshop will be participatory, and offer a number of fun activities and ideas to take back to the classroom. The facilitator: Dr Chandra Shekhar Balachandran is a PhD in Geography from Kent State University, USA. He has established ‘The Indian Institute of Geographical Studies’ (TIIGS), and has been educating students and teachers in geography for over 30 years. He regularly writes articles on geography for the newspapers.

The participants: The workshop is open to teachers of Classes 4-7. Priority will be given to NGO-run schools and teachers working with underserved children. Date: September 7th, 2013 (Saturday) Time: 9:00 am - 5 pm (Registrations at 9 am sharp.) Venue: GeoVidyaa Geography Centre of Excellence, The Army Public School, Kamaraj Road, Bangalore 560042.
