# 3D shapes model making

### Objectives

- Identify attributes of 3D shapes
- Identify differences between 2D and 3D
- To develop the skill of model making.
- To give an opportunity to develop eye hand co-ordination, Spatial skills and fine motor skills.

### Prerequisites/Instructions, prior preparations, if any

Prior knowledge about 2D shapes and its properties

### Materials/ Resources needed

- Scissors
- Instrumental box
- Papers
- Gum/Glue

### Process (How to do the activity)

- Ask 3 groups to do one 3D shape (Cuboid, Cube, Cylinder)
- Distribute colour a4 sheets, glue and scissors to each group
- Each group will be assigned with one instructor who gives instructions on model making to the students
- Each student in a group needs to fallow the instructions of their instructor and make the models accordingly

**Instructions for making Cube:**

- Take a piece of paper (A4 sheet)
- In the centre of your paper, draw a long rectangle and divide it up into four 2 inch squares.
- Draw another square to the right of the second square from the top.
- Draw another square to the left of the second square from the top.
- After that you can see a cross with six equal sized squares and the longest part should be closest to you.
- With scissors, cut along the outside edges of the shape
- Fold the paper-Follow along the inside lines, and fold the paper
- Study the properties of a cube.

**Developmental Questions:**

- How many sides does a cube have ?
- Are all sides the same ?
- Point to its vertices. How many vertices does a cube have ?
- Point to its edges and faces. How many are there ?
- What is the shape of each of its face ? So how many squares are there in a cube ?
- What are the properties of a cube ?

**Instructions for making Cuboid:**

- Take a piece of paper (A4 sheet)
- In the centre of your paper, draw a long rectangle and divide it up into four same sized Rectangles.
- Draw the square to the right of the second Rectangle from the top.
- Draw another square to the left of the second Rectangle from the top.
- With scissors, cut along the outside edges of the shape
- Fold the paper-Follow along the inside lines, and fold the paper
- Study the properties of a cuboid.

**Developmental Questions:**

- How many sides does a cuboid have ?
- Are all sides the same ?
- Point to its vertices. How many vertices does a cuboid have ?
- Point to its edges and faces. How many are there ?
- What is the shape of each of its face ? So how many squares and rectangles are there in a cuboid ?
- What are the properties of a cuboid ?

**Instructions for making Cylinder:**

- Determine the height you want for your cylinder.
- Measure the paper and cut it to the desired dimension, as needed. For example, cut your paper, so two sides are 6 inches long for a 6-inch cylinder
- Place small tabs of tape on one end of the paper. The tape goes on the sides perpendicular to those you measured for the height.
- Roll the paper until the cylinder is the desired diameter.
- Cut two circles with the same diameter as the cylinder. Paste circles on both ends of the cylinder.

- How many bases are in a cylinder?
- What are the properties of a cylinder?
