Scope of this document

The following note is a background document for teachers. It summarises the things we will need to know. This note is meant to be a ready reference for the teacher to develop the theme of Culture and Society. This document attempts to cover all the topics identified in the concept map. To plan the actual lessons, the teacher must use this in connection with the theme plan.

Here resources are generated and searched using internet and e-books. Traditional books are also considered for preparing this write ups. There are links which are highlighted in blue to access more information.( internet connection required). Teachers can use the activities as a class-room activities, projects, or in any form while teaching this chapter. Teachers are free to modify, enrich the activities. Here topics are discussed beyond syllabus.

Sociology would understand culture as an integral part of human society. Hence there are functional theories of culture (cultural practises help humans function better), conflict theories (which say culture exists for human beings to live in a stable manner and avoid conflicts etc), symbolic interactionist theories etc.

Curricular Objectives

Origin of Culture and Society

  1. The origin of society is when people started to come together for the first time for different reasons. You can ask different people but according to Thomas Hobbes people come together because they need each other for protection, they are basically saying you don't kill me, or help me not get killed and I will do the same for you. However there are other ways to look at it. For example some philosophers like John Locke believe that people are less selfish and come together because they have the same beliefs as in they want to preserve the social contract. The social contract according to Locke, if you were wondering, is they promise to preserve all other human beings' right to life, property, and liberty. Culture and Society – An introduction

Sourced from [[6]]

Culture consists of the beliefs, behaviors, objects, and other characteristics common to the members of a particular group or society. Through culture, people and groups define themselves, conform to society's shared values, and contribute to society. Thus, culture includes many societal aspects: language, customs, values, norms, mores, rules, tools, technologies, products, organizations, and institutions. This latter term institution refers to clusters of rules and cultural meanings associated with specific social activities. Common institutions are the family, education, religion, work, and health care.

Popularly speaking, being cultured means being well-educated, knowledgeable of the arts, stylish, and well-mannered. High culture—generally pursued by the upper class—refers to classical music, theater, fine arts, and other sophisticated pursuits. Members of the upper class can pursue high art because they have cultural capital, which means the professional credentials, education, knowledge, and verbal and social skills necessary to attain the “property, power, and prestige” to “get ahead” socially. Low culture, or popular culture—generally pursued by the working and middle classes—refers to sports, movies, television sitcoms and soaps, and rock music. Remember that sociologists define culture differently than they do cultured, high culture, low culture, and popular culture.

Sociologists define society as the people who interact in such a way as to share a common culture. The cultural bond may be ethnic or racial, based on gender, or due to shared beliefs, values, and activities. The term society can also have a geographic meaning and refer to people who share a common culture in a particular location. For example, people living in arctic climates developed different cultures from those living in desert cultures. In time, a large variety of human cultures arose around the world.

Culture and society are intricately related. A culture consists of the “objects” of a society, whereas a society consists of the people who share a common culture. When the terms culture and society first acquired their current meanings, most people in the world worked and lived in small groups in the same locale.

Meaning and scope of Culture

(Sourced From: Blog of by Md. Rajibul Hasan and NCERT textbooks)

Often the term ‘culture’ is used to refer to the acquiring of refined taste in classical music, dance forms, painting. This refined taste was thought to distinguish people from the ‘uncultured’ masses, even concerning something we would today see as individual, like the preference for coffee over tea! By contrast, the sociologist looks at culture not as something that distinguishes individuals, but as a way of life in which all members of society participate. Every social organisation develops a culture of its own. One early anthropological definition of culture comes from the British scholar Edward Tylor: “Culture or civilisation taken in its wide ethnographic sense, is that complex whole which includes knowledge, belief, art, morals, law, custom and any other capabilities and habits acquired by man as a member of society” (Tylor 1871 I:1).

Two generations later, the founder of the “functional school” of anthropology, Bronislaw Malinowski of Poland (1884-1942) wrote: “Culture comprises inherited artifacts, goods, technical process, ideas, habits and values” (Malinowski 1931: 621-46). Clifford Geertz suggested that we look at human actions in the same way as we look at words in a book, and see them as conveying a message. “... Man is an animal suspended in webs of significance he himself has spun. I take culture to be those webs...”.The search is not for a causal explanation, but for an interpretative one, that is in search for meaning (Geertz 1973: 5). Likewise Leslie White had placed a comparable emphasis on culture as a means of adding meaning to objective reality, using the example of people regarding water from a particular source as holy.

Thus, we see that there are different ways of defining culture, some of which are reproduced below:

Culture is...

(a) a way of thinking, feeling, believing.

(b) the total way of life of a people.

(c) an abstraction from behaviour.

(d) learned behaviour.

(e) a storehouse of pooled learning.

(f) the social legacy the individual acquires from his group.

(g) a set of standardised orientations to recurrent problems.

 (h) a mechanism for the normative regulation of behaviour.

Culture distinguishes one human group from others. It also distinguishes humans from other animals. A people's culture includes their beliefs, rules of behavior, language, rituals, art, technology, styles of dress, ways of producing and cooking food, religion, and political and economic systems.

Culture is the most important concept in anthropology (the study of all aspects of human life, past and present). Anthropologists commonly use the term culture to refer to a society or group in which many or all people live and think in the same ways. Likewise, any group of people who share a common culture—and in particular, common rules of behavior and a basic form of social organization—constitutes a society. Thus, the terms culture and society are somewhat interchangeable. However, while many animals live in societies, such as herds of elk or packs of wild dogs, only humans have culture.

Dimensions of Culture

Culture can be distinguished into three dimensions

(i) Cognitive: This refers to how we learn to process what we hear or see, so as to give it meaning

(identifying the ring of a cell-phone as ours, recognising the cartoon of a politician).

(ii) Normative: This refers to rules of conduct (not opening other people’s letters, performing rituals

at death).

(iii) Material: This includes any activity made possible by means of materials. Materials also include tools or machines. Examples include internet ‘chatting’, using rice-flour paste to design kolam on floors.

Culture is shared

Culture is social, it is a group product. It's a man's natural tendency to socialize. People living together in a society share culture. For example, almost all people living in the United States share the English language, dress in similar styles, eat many of the same foods, and celebrate many of the same holidays. All the people of a society collectively create and maintain culture. Societies preserve culture for much longer than the life of any person. They preserve it in the form of knowledge, such as scientific discoveries; objects, such as works of art; and traditions, such as the observance of holidays.

Culture Is Learned

People are not born with culture; they have to learn it. For instance, people must learn to speak and understand a language and to abide by the rules of a society. In all human societies, children learn culture from adults. Anthropologists call this process enculturation, or cultural transmission.

Culture Is Symbolic

People have culture primarily because they can communicate with and understand symbols. Symbols allow people to develop complex thoughts and to exchange those thoughts with others. Language and other forms of symbolic communication, such as art, enable people to create, explain, and record new ideas and information.

To convey new ideas, people constantly invent new symbols, such as for mathematical formulas. In addition, people may use one symbol, such as a single word, to represent many different ideas, feelings, or values. Thus, symbols provide a flexible way for people to communicate even very complex thoughts with each other. For example, only through symbols can architects, engineers, and construction workers communicate the information necessary to construct a skyscraper or bridge.

People have the capacity at birth to construct, understand, and communicate through symbols, primarily by using language.

Culture is integrated

Cultures are not haphazard collection of customs and beliefs. Cultures are integrated and patterned systems. If one part of the system changes, others parts change as well. For example, during the 1950s, most American women planned domestic careers as homemakers and mothers. Cultures are integrated not simply by their dominant economic activities and related social patterns but also by sets of values, ideas, symbols, and judgments. Cultures train their individual members to share certain personality traits.

Culture is adaptive

Culture helps human societies survive in changing natural environments. For example, the end of the last Ice Age, beginning about 15,000 years ago, posed an enormous challenge to which humans had to adapt. Before this time, large portions of the northern hemisphere were covered in ice that contained much of the water of the earth. When the earth warmed, many land areas were submerged by rising sea levels from melting sea ice. People developed new technologies and learned how to subsist on new plant and animal species. Eventually some people settled into villages of permanent, durable houses and farms.

Culture is complex

Culture is a complex whole that social scientists can break down into simple units called 'cultural trait '. A trait may be a custom, such as burial of the dead; a device, such as a slow; a gesture, such as a handshake; or and idea.

Culture is all encompassing

For anthropologists, culture includes much more than refinement, taste, sophistication, education, and appreciation of the find arts. Not only college graduates but all people are" cultured ". The most interesting and significant cultural forces are those that affect people everyday of their lives, particularly those that influence children during enculturation. Culture, as defined anthropologically, encompasses features that are sometimes regarded as trivial or unworthy of serious study, such as popular culture.

People use culture actively

Although cultural rules tell us which to do and how to do it, people don't always do what the rules say should be done. People use their culture actively and creatively, rather than following its dictates. People can learn, interpret, and manipulate the rule in different ways. Also, culture is contested. That is, different groups in society often struggle with one another over whose ideas, values, and beliefs will prevail.

Culture is cumulative

All cultural knowledge does not perpetually accumulate. At the same time that new cultural traits are added, some old ones are lost because they are no longer useful. For example, most city dwellers today do not have or need the skills required for survival in a wilderness. What are more important in modern urban life are such things as the ability to drive a car, use a computer, and understand how to obtain food in a supermarket or restaurant.

Change can occur as a result of both inventions within a society as well as the diffusion of cultural traits from one society to another.

Culture no longer exist in isolation

It is highly unlikely that there are any societies still existing in total isolation from the outside world. Even small, out of the way tribal societies are now being integrated to some extent into the global economy.

Culture and Identity

Sourced from NCERT textbooks

Community identity is based on birth and ‘belonging’ rather than on some form of acquired qualifications or ‘accomplishment’. It is what we ‘are’ rather than what we have ‘become’. We don’t have to do anything to be born into a community – in fact, no one has any choice about which family or community or country they are born into. These kinds of identities are called ‘ascriptive’ – that is, they are determined by the accidents of birth and do not involve any choice on the part of the individuals concerned.

Identities are not inherited but fashioned both by the individual and the group through their relationship with others. For the individual the social roles that s/he plays imparts identity. Every person in modern society plays multiple roles. For instance within the family s/he may be a parent or a child but for each of the specific roles there are particular responsibilities and powers.

It is not sufficient to enact roles. They also have to be recognised and acknowledged. This can often be done through the recognition of the particular language that is used among role players. Students in schools have their own way of referring to their teachers, other students, class performances. By creating this language which also serves as a code, they create their own world of meanings

and significances. Similarly, women are also known to create their own language and through it their own private space beyond the control of men especially when they congregate at the

pond to bathe in rural areas or across washing lines on rooftops in urban areas.

In a culture there can be many sub- cultures, like that of the elite and working class youth. Sub-cultures are marked by style, taste and association. Particular sub-cultures are identifiable by their speech, dress codes, preference for particular kind of music or the manner in which they interact with their group members.

Ethnocentrism

It is only when cultures come into contact with one another that the question of ethnocentrism arises. Ethnocentrism is the application of one’s own cultural values in evaluating the behaviour and beliefs of people from other cultures. This means that the cultural values projected as the standard or norm are considered superior to that of the beliefs and values of other cultures. Underlying ethnocentric comparisons is a sense of cultural superiority clearly demonstrated in colonial situations.

Ethnocentrism is the opposite of cosmopolitanism, which values other cultures for their difference. A cosmopolitan outlook does not seek to evaluate the values and beliefs of other people according to one’s own. It celebrates and accommodates different cultural propensities within its fold and promotes cultural exchange and borrowings to enrich one’s own culture. For example, the English language has emerged as a leading vehicle of international communication through its constant inclusion of foreign words into its vocabulary. Again the popularity of Hindi film music can be attributed to its borrowings from western pop music as well as from different traditions of Indian folk and semi-classical forms like the bhangra and ghazal. A modern society is appreciative of cultural difference and does not close its doors to cultural influences from abroad. But such influences are always incorporated in a distinctive way, which can combine with elements of indigenous culture. The English language despite its foreign inclusions does not become a separate language, nor does Hindi film music lose its character through borrowings. The absorption of diverse styles, forms, sounds and artifacts provides an identity to a cosmopolitan culture. In a global world where modern means of communication are shrinking distances between cultures, a cosmopolitan outlook allows diverse influences to enrich one’s own culture

We are all equally committed and loyal to our respective identities. Once again it is possible to come across people who may not be particularly committed to one or the other aspect of their identity. But the possibility of this commitment is potentially available to most people. Because

of this, conflicts that involve our communities (whether of nation, language, religion, caste or region) are very hard to deal with. Each side in the conflict thinks of the other side as a hated enemy, and there is a tendency to exaggerate the virtues of one’s own side as well as the vices of the other side. Thus, when two nations are at war, patriots in each nation see the other as the enemy aggressor; each side believes that God and truth are on their side. In the heat of the moment, it is very hard for people on either side to see that they are constructing matching but reversed mirror images of each other.

Gender Issues and Culture

How is gender related to culture?

Expectations about attributes and behaviours appropriate to women or men and about the relations betweenwomen and men – in other words, gender – are shaped by culture. Gender identities and gender relations are critical aspects of culture because they shape the way daily life is lived in the family, but also in the wider community and the workplace.Gender (like race or ethnicity) functions as an organizing principle for society because of the cultural meaningsgiven to being male or female. This is evident in the division of labour according to gender. In most societies there are clear patterns of “women’s work” and “men’s work,” both in the household and in the wider community – and cultural explanations of why this should be so. The patterns and the explanations differ among societies and change over time.

A gender analysis is required for all initiatives as it ensures that planning is based on facts and analysis rather than assumptions. Gender analysis has been advocated for over 20 years because of findings that projects can fail due to lack of information about basic cultural patterns such as the division of labour by gender within households and about the rewards and incentives associated with the division of labour. A gender analysis is therefore a means of increasing the quality and effectiveness of initiatives as well as supporting gender equality. A gender analysis should provide information and analysis about the families and communities that will be targeted or affected by an initiative – about activities, needs and priorities, whether and how these differ by gender, and the implications for the proposed initiative. It should identify local and national initiatives for gender equality – the efforts by governments and civil society to pursue these issues, and how the initiative can complement these efforts. A gender analysis is the basis for planning an initiative that has realistic objectives and activities related to gender equality.

Cultural Change

Cultural change is the way in which societies change their patterns of culture. The impetus for change can be internal or external. In regard to internal causes, for instance, new methods of farming or agriculture can boost agricultural production, which can transform the nature of food consumption and quality of life of an agrarian community. On the other hand external intervention in the form of conquest or colonisation can also effect deep seated changes in the cultural practices and behaviour of a society.

Cultural change can occur through changes in the natural environment, contact with other cultures or processes of adaptation. Changes in the natural environment or ecology can drastically alter the way of life of a people. When forest dwelling communities are deprived of access to the forest and its produce either because of legal restrictions or due to its decimation, it can have disastrous effects on the dwellers and their way of life. Tribal communities in North East India as well as in middle India have been the worst affected by the loss of forest resources. Along with evolutionary change there can also be revolutionary change. When a culture is transformed rapidly and its values and meaning systems undergo a radical change then revolutionary change takes place. Revolutionary change can be initiated through political intervention, technological innovation or ecological transformation. The French Revolution (1789) transformed French society by destroying the estate system of ranking, abolishing the monarchy, and inculcating the values of liberty, equality and fraternity among its citizens. When a different understanding comes to prevail, culture change occurs. Recent years have seen an amazing expansion of the media, both electronic and print.

Globalization and Culture

Sourced from [[20]]

Globalization is accelerating the contact between different cultures. Traded goods are often the reflection of culture. Obvious examples are Hollywood movies, Japanese anime or French wine. International investment brings multinational enterprises into contact with foreign lands and communities. Migration results in people of different cultures living together. Global communications and the Internet expose us to the lives, ideas and values of others. But there is more to culture than consumer products and artistic expression. It can also refer to our society's beliefs, values and even civilization. Culture in that sense changes much more slowly. Notwithstanding their apparent modernity, the Japanese are still very Japanese. Through globalization we have greater awareness of cultural differences across the globe. We also have greater contact with different cultures, with which we often live side-by-side.

Cultural mixing can be immensely enriching for the human spirit. It can also be a powerful source of innovation. At the same time, it can give rise to misunderstanding and even conflict. Public policy should promote cross-cultural understanding and tolerance. Policy should most certainly not use cultural differences to provoke conflits.

As our societies become more prosperous, culture becomes a business. China's rapid economic growth and new-found prosperity have given rise to a dynamic contemporary culture -- Chinese modern ink painting is now tops at the auctions.

Acculturation

Wikipedia states Acculturation is the exchange of cultural features that results when groups of individuals having different cultures come into continuous first hand contact; the original cultural patterns of either or both groups may be altered, but the groups remain distinct.

Despite definitions and evidence that acculturation entails two-way processes of change, research and theory have continued with a focus on the adjustments and changes experienced by minorities in response to their contact with the dominant majority.

Thus, acculturation can be conceived to be the processes of cultural learning imposed upon minorities by the fact of being minorities. If enculturation is first-culture learning, then acculturation is second-culture learning. This has often been conceived to be a unidimensional, zero-sum cultural conflict in which the minority's culture is displaced by the dominant group's culture in a process of assimilation.

Scientific and technological advancement and culture.

Scientific and technogiacal advancement is witnesed every corner of the life. Its impacts are visible easily. The standard website wikipedia lists some points regarding “ how our life changed and eased?”. These are listed as below.

In many ways, technology simplifies life.

  • The rise of a leisure class
  • A more informed society
  • Sets the stage for more complex learning tasks
  • Increases multi-tasking (although this may not be simplifying)
  • Global networking
  • Creates denser social circles
  • Cheaper prices
  • Greater specialization in jobs

In other ways, technology complicates life.

  • Pollution is a serious problem in a technologically advanced society (from acid rain to Chernobyl and Bhopal)
  • The increase in transportation technology has brought congestion in some areas
  • Technicism (although this may not be complicating)
  • New forms of danger existing as a consequence of new forms of technology, such as the first generation of nuclear reactors
  • New forms of entertainment, such as video games and internet access could have possible social effects on areas such as academic performance
  • Increased probability of some diseases and disorders, such as obesity
  • Social separation of singular human interaction. Technology has increased the need to talk to more people faster.
  • Structural unemployment
  • Anthropogenic climate change

So we must very cautious about impacts of new advances in science and technolgy. It will become new culture. We must bridge the gaps between older and newer concepts.

Cultural Lag

  1. The role played by material inventions, that is, by technology, in social change probably received most emphasis in the work of William F. Ogburn. It was Ogburn, also, who was chiefly responsible for the idea that the rate of invention within society is a function of the size of the existing culture base. He saw the rate of material invention as increasing with the passage of time.Ogburn believed that material and non-material cultures change in different ways. Change in material culture is believed to have a marked directional or progressive character. This is because there are agreed-upon standards of efficiency that are used to evaluate material inventions. To use air-planes, as an example, we keep working to develop planes that will fly, higher and faster, and carry more payloads on a lower unit cost. Because airplanes can be measured against these standards, inventions in this area appear rapidly and predictably. In the area of non-material culture, on the other hand there often are no such generally accepted standards. Whether one prefers a Hussain, a Picasso, or a Gainsborough, for example, is a matter of taste, and styles of painting fluctuate unevenly. Similarly, in institutions such as government and the economic system there are competing forms of styles, Governments may be dictatorships, oligarchies, republics or democracies.
  2. Economic system includes communist, socialist, feudal, and capitalist ones. As far as can be told, there is no regular progression from one form of government or economic system to another. The obvious directional character of change in material culture is lacking in many areas of non-material culture. In addition to the difference in the directional character of change, Ogburn and others believe that material culture tends to change faster than non-material culture. Certainly one of the imperative aspects of modern American life is the tremendous development of technology. Within this century, life has been transformed by invention of the radio, TV, automobiles, airplanes, rockets, transistors, and computers and so on. While this has been happening in material culture, change in government, economic system, family life, education, and religion seems to have been much slower. This difference in rates of cultural change led Ogburn to formulate the concept of culture lag. Material inventions, he believed bring changes that require adjustments in various areas of non-material culture.Invention of the automobile, for instance, freed young people from direct parental observation, made it possible for them to work at distances from their homes, and, among other things, facilitated crime by making escape easier. Half a century earlier, families still were structured as they were in the era of the family farm when young people were under continuous observation and worked right on the homestead.
  3. Culture lag is defined as the time between the appearance of a new material invention and the making of appropriate adjustments in corresponding area of non-material culture. This time is often long. It was over fifty years, for example, after the typewriter was invented before it was used systematically in offices. Even today, we may have a family system better adapted to a farm economy than to an urban industrial one, and nuclear weapons exist in a diplomatic atmosphere attuned to the nineteenth century. As the discussion implies, the concept of culture lag is associated with the definition of social problems. Scholars envision some balance or adjustment existing between material and non-material cultures. That balance is upset by the appearance of raw material objects. The resulting imbalance is defined as a social problem until non-material culture changes in adjustment to the new technology.

Connections with Local Situation

Local Culture

Local culture can be defined as “ culture practiced by group of people lived in local region” which looks very differant in practices, when compare to one big nation. But spirit of the practices are always same as the identified nation ( Samkritik Bharath is always unique in spirit . For example ganesh chaturthi is celebreted in all over india which carries the same spirt of bhakti, which differs in pooj kram (worshipping style) and offerings.

So first student should understand his/her culture. Then only they can understand global nature of culture. So give some projects/expressional activities to students before starting this chapter.

Vegetation and Culture

Local vegitation influences the culture practitionars. Every practice first start with localy available things/natural products. So culture emphsizes to use local and always natural products. Tradition demands for natural items which is mandatory. Otherwise practionars feel un-comfort. Which controlls humans selfish attitude to-wards nature. So local vegitation and culture is very much inter- dependent. .

Local employment and Culture

Employment generation has economic value. When we look at our culture speacilly (indian) the some of our occupations are culture driven. For example women use Kumkum/bangles / haldi in daily life , which creates variety of jobs like : vegitation of kumkum/ haldi , marketting for kumkum/ haldi, proceessing uinits , packing, wholesale trading, retail trading. If by any influence all the women deside not to use kumkum will cause unemployment to dependent on this.

Current issues and debates .
