ABOUT TUMKUR DISTRICT

GEOGRAPHICAL PROFILE

Tumkur is one of the progressive district of Karnataka situtated in the southern part of karnataka. Tumkur the district head quarter is located 70 km N.W. of Bangalore. The district falls between 12-45º and 1420º North Latitude and 76-20º and 77-31º East Longtitude. It is bounded by Ananthapura district in the N.E. (A.P.), Chitradurga district in the north Hassan in the west mandya and Bangalore in the South and Kolar in the S.E. Tumkur is the anglicised form of ―Tumukuru which is derived by the term Tummeguru or Tumbe-ooru. Which inturn derived by a name Thumbe, a small herb belongs to labiatae family used to grow luxuniantly in the vicinity. Within a district, One or more taluks form a revenue sub-division. Tumkur district is made up of 2 such sub-divisions namely Tumkur, and Madhugiri.
The 10 taluks in Tumkur come under these sub-divisions in the following way:

HISTORICAL BACKGROUND:

In accordance with the usual practice Tumkur district too has been named after its headquarter town. Tumkur is the anglicised form of Tumakuru which is itself a derivative of Tummeguru, the original name of the place. The present town has a history of just a couple of centuries and is said to owe its origin to Kante Arasu, a member of the Mysore royal family. The town does not have any historical relics to boast of, for even the traces of the fort, said to have been erected at the time of its founding, have already vanished completely. The area comprised in the district consists of a few places of great antiquarian interest and several places of historical importance. Sage Kadamba is believed to have had his hermitage near Kadaba in Gubbi taluk. On his way to Ayodhya after the conquest of Lanka, Shri Rama is said to have called on this sage at his hermitage for a brief sojourn, during which, at the request of his spouse Sita, he ordered the river Shimsha to be dammed so as to form a large lake here. Sampige in Turuvekcre taluk is identified with the ancient Champakanagara, the capital of Sudhanva of the Mahabharata period. The Paleolithic artifacts discovered near Biligere and Kibbanahalli reveal that certain places of the district were inhabited by the pre-historic man. The district has a megalithic site also and this is located on a crest of the low ridge near Keralakatte village. Paste Tumkur Photo Tumkur does not owe much to its history as this beautiful city is being known as a place of temples. It is said that the region was ruled by Vijayanagar chieftain who had built the Hill Fort which became the scene of fierce battle between the British and Tipu Sultan. The city of Tumkur District in Karnataka was founded by Kante Arasu of Mysore Royal family. On the occasion of "Suvarna Karnataka", the 50th anniversary of the present Karnataka state, Tumkur was renamed as Tumakuru. The Hoysalas, the Vijayanagara kings, King Timmapparaja Aras, the Wodeyars, kings of Mysore and British were the empires that ruled this place.
Some of the well-known personalities from this place are Kante Arasu, Tipu Sultan, HyderAli, Amarashilpi Jakanachari, Gubbi Veeranna, Raja Ramanna, C. P. Sadashivaiah, Inventor, Dr. Sree Sree Shivakumara Swamiji. It consists chiefly of elevated land intersected by river valleys. A range of hills rising to nearly 4,000 feet (1,200 m) crosses it from north to south, forming the watershed between the systems of the Krishna and the Kaveri. The principal streams are the Jayamangala and the Shimsha. The mineral wealth of Tumkur is considerable; iron is obtained in large quantities from the hillsides; and excellent building-stone is quarried. The slopes of the Devarayanadurga hills are clothed with forests. Wildlife such as leopards, bears and wild boar have been recorded here. Although, tigers have been recorded from these forests as late as 1950s, most recent reports are of stray sightings and need confirmation. The annual rainfall averages 39 inches.
Tumkur is a good study center from primary education to higher education. It has its own university. Within this town, there are four technology institutions and one medical institution.
