The focus of this activity is to develop digital stories for a teaching-learning situations - examples, creating a photo essay for documenting an event or a place, comic strips to tell a story (graphic novels) and an audio recording for sharing understanding. The focus on all of these activities is to demonstrate possibilities of using digital stories to express understanding and learning without focusing exclusively on text based traditional teaching methods.

Objectives

  1. Students will get to known about their surrounding people’s life cycles.
  2. Developing skills on telling a story digitally
  3. Students connect well with classroom topics.
  4. Capturing information in different formats – Image, video etc.
  5. Students can share stories with others.
  6. Help the students to understand their text books topics by relating to the life, students will start connecting text book topics with surrounding life.

General places to visit

  1. Post office
  2. Police station
  3. Milk dairy
  4. Health center
  5. Banks
  6. Municipality office, Ward Office
  7. Anganwadi (preschools)
  8. Local market shops (Markets)
  9. Fire station
  10. Veterinary Hospital
  11. Rain Water Harvesting

Prepare questions for the visiting places

  1. Role of the institution (purpose, aims)- WHY?
  2. What are activities of the institute?
  3. Roles and responsibilities of the institute?
  4. What asre the achievements, strengths, advantages of the institute?
  5. Challenges, issues?
  6. suggestions to students?
  7. Suggestions to society / public at large?

General questionnaires about the places

1. Post office

  1. Why do we need Post office in our society ?
  2. What are the functions of the post office ?
  3. Can we send letters to anywhere in the world ?
  4. Can I send/post any kind of things to my friend through post ?
  5. How post office will do the sort out of received letters/couriers ?
  6. How many stamps will available in post office ?
  7. What is the use of stamps ? Is the stamps necessary to send letter?
  8. How will send letter from one place to another place ?
  9. PIN means what ?
  10. From PIN number can I find out the place ?
  11. How will select the recruit employees ?
  12. What are the general problem which post office is facing ?
  13. What are all the expectation from public ?
  14. What are all the expectation from students ?

2. Police station

  1. Why Police station is needed in our society?
  2. What are the functions of the police station ?
  3. What is complaint registration ?
  4. What is meant by FIR ?
  5. Is FIR is compulsory to arrest anyone?
  6. What will do if children done any criminal work ?
  7. Why many vehicles will be in police station area ?
  8. What is the different guns will police use?
  9. Can police use gun for any criminal and the person who is destroying the peace?
  10. Will police have full authority to punish ?
  11. What is the working time for police and for station?
  12. What is the difference between white dress police and Khaki police ?
  13. How will select the recruit employees ?
  14. What are the general problem which Police station is facing ?
  15. What are all the expectation from public ?
  16. What are all the expectation from students ?

3. Milk dairy

  1. What will do with collected milk from formers?
  2. How you will do the milk packing and other milk product packing ?
  3. Again will do milk refining ?
  4. How milk refining process will work ?
  5. Why we have drink boil milk ?
  6. How will test the milk quality ?

Preparation for the Digital story telling from school:-

  1. Teachers have to discuss and decide the institutions/places to visit and its aims
  2. School HM need take permission from institutions/places for students visit.
  3. Teachers have to do students groups(group should have all level students and minimum 4 students in a group, max 10) and allocate each teacher to each student group.
  4. Teachers have to explain to the students about DST activities and the advantages.
  5. Teachers have to help students to prepare basic questionnaires about the visiting institutions/places.
  6. Allot roles of the students in the group.
    1. Asking questions
    2. Documenting responses
    3. Photos and videos
      NOTE:Roles can rotate during visit for giving opportunities to all
  7. Students must read the textbook chapter which is related to their visiting place, so more doubts will come to their mind and they can get clarification in the institution.
  8. Teachers and school have to arrange camera, sound recorder and video recorder for students to take picture,recording videos of the institutions/places.

Procedure :-

1 After all the preparations for the event, on the day of event students have to sit with their selected group, along with teachers.
a. General precautions when they are walking on the road and behavior in visiting place.
b. Within the groups, need to make small groups, so each sub groups have to take care of their work :-
Ex:Group 1 can ask questions
Group 2 - Take photos
Group 3 - note down the points
2 Once again have to explain to all students about objectives and advantages of the event.
3 Students have to behave in disciplined way and don't disturb the regular work of the staff.
4 After Students visited the place, try to collect all information about the place.
5 The other group need to take photos of the place, if required they can record as video.
6 Without missing single point, students have to note down all the collected information.
7 Students can record the points by using audio recorder or mobile recorder.

Post work for preparing Digital Story :-

  1. After students come back from the place, students have to sit as group and by discussing each other they have to write down in the story format by adding collected information.
  2. Teacher have to help to students to write it.
  3. After they completed the story writing, Teachers have to take them to computer lab and students have to type the same story in computer in Kannada language.
  4. Teachers have to helps to students for copying photos which they taken in the visit time.
  5. Teacher helps to students for adding picture in their story text document.
  6. Students can add video or audio file with text document where ever it required.
  7. This process will help to student to remember all the collected information in their mind. After each group completed their story writing in computer.
  8. School have to arrange small event to present all the group stories. With all the students by using projector, teachers have to give only technical support to present the story by using computer.


Outcomes :-

  1. Students will understand about their surrounding and public places.
  2. Students will know importance of the Public service places and its uses.
  3. Students will learn the story creating, telling skill.
  4. Students will get good opportunities learn leadership qualities.
  5. It will help to students on thinking on the topics and will start to link with their surrounding work.
  6. Will know more about surrounding public places, and how they can use in life.
  7. Students will learn how to working with group.
