Introduce parallel lines

Understand perpendicular distance between parallel lines

Prerequisites/Instructions, prior preparations, if any

Prior knowledge of point, lines, angles, intersecting lines, vertically opposite angles

Materials/ Resources needed

  • Digital : Computer, geogebra application, projector.
  • Non digital : Worksheet and pencil.
  • Geogebra files : Parallellines-1.ggb

Process (How to do the activity)

  • Prior hands on activity: Draw two lines which are parallel in the file to ask will these lines meet.
  • Use the file to seek the initial observations from children – if the lines will ever meet
  • Is it possible for two lines to never meet.
  • How do you know if they will meet at certain point?
  • Drag the screen on either sides to show the two lines never meet.
  • Inquire if measuring the distance between the two lines will determine if the lines will meet.
  • Plot two points on the lines and join them
  • Draw two parallel lines
  • What do you notice about these lines
  • Note the distance between the two lines
  • Introduce concept of transversal : Draw two lines with transversal – how can you say that the two lines are parallel.
  • For the parallel lines identify the interior region and exterior region.
  • Evaluation at the end of the activity
