Summary

Kishoris have discussed in the last week what is Patriarchy and how that gives more power to Men. Also they have learnt what are the possible ways to overcome Patriarchy by watching cinema clips and through the persons/people in their own lives. This week they are going to discuss various methods to overcome Patriarchy through Role-Play. If we see a problem in different ways we get various options to overcome the same. Similarly, how we can overcome Patriarchy through different ways is the Objective of this Module.

Assumptions

1. Although few Kishoris express themselves well or communicate enough while they are in a group, there are many of them who still lack self-confidence.

2. Some Kishoris have voluntarily started sharing their views. The forces that suppress Kishoris need to be put down while strengthening Kishoris’ voices.

3. As the level of trust between us and them is increasing day by day, it is appropriate to now discuss sensitive issues at this stage.

4. Kishoris are discouraged because teachers would have scolded them in the last class.

5. They know what Patriarchy is.

6. Kishoris know who all and how much power they have on them through Venn Diagram Activity.

7. Some Kishoris do not understand the Video/Audio in different languages so they hesitate to participate in conversation.

8. Kishoris hesitate to read and write, hence they don’t proactively participate in activities.

9. Last week when we asked about Rules of Patriarchy except one Kishori no one spoke.

10. Teachers of last classes take more time.

11. Kishoris might remember the role play we did during the module “Definition of Adolescence'’.

Objective:

Kick-starting the discussion on how to overcome Rules of Patriarchy.

Process:

Start our conversation with Kishoris by asking about their wellbeing and telling them about the rules

Remind them about the discussion that took place last week videos -10 mins

After this facilitator to call for 5 volunteers, if no one comes then call out the pre-decided 5 names – 5 Mins

Call each volunteer separately and ask them to enact a small play by giving the topic “A guys has come to see a girl” in front of other kishoris. Give time to prepare for the below characters. No facilitator should be there with this group.

Kishori: 15 Years, very good at studying.

Guy who came to see the girl: 15 years elder to the girl who is very rich

Father: Daily wager, 50 years, building construction laborer

Mother: 40 years, works as a maid.

Along with these 4 characters, give one blank character for which Kishoris can assign any character (like Kishori’s brother or relative)

Meanwhile, divide rest of the kishoris into two groups. Provide one chit to each group, each chit should have one of the below words.

River, Mobile Phone, Watermelon, Pink color, Biriyani, Jeans Pant, English, Kabaddi, Bike, Hundred Rupees Note, TV News.

All the Kishoris should build a meaningful story out of the words given, Kishoris must tell one sentence out of the words given to the team, that sentence should complement the previous sentence.- 15 Mins

After the play ask Kishoris about each character, conversation, behaviour and about the blank character – 10 Mins

After the play ask the group how to perform the same act differently without changing the characters and situation? but they can change only the blank character -20 Mins

After the second play, ask them to list out the differences between the two plays.

Ask Kishoris about their opinions after seeing the two plays.

Write down the points mentioned by Kishoris

In the 2nd time also if points on Patriarchy are highlighted then facilitator can explain how to overcome the Patriarchy (using the blank character or Father-Mother conversation).

We cannot overcome everything at a time, if we try and put efforts in different ways then we can overcome Rules of Patriarchy. End the conversation by saying we can discuss on similar points in the coming weeks.-10 Mins
