Summary

In the previous weeks, Kishoris learnt about adolescence and their problems, continuing this, discussions on patriarchy will also be started from this week - as part of this, discussion on body image. The propaganda of various products, costumes and advertisements with actresses and the imagery which make Kishoris think about their body and the body image is the main intention of this module.

Assumptions

  1. Last week we had speech competition hence our module was postponed.
  2. Due to sports festival/sports day on previous day possibly Kishoris must have been tired.
  3. Kishoris may hesitate to participate as they may think they need to interact with teachers to answer the questions about the subject discussed in the module. As our activities are dependent on the participation process, this may affect our activities.
  4. Those Kishoris who are absent on Monday may not know anything about British Asian Trust.
  5. This being an enthusiastic activity there might be huge commotion.
  6. Due to unavailability of television at home, some of them may not have watched any advertisements.
  7. Better to make the groups before going. By this groups can be segregated together based on the languages or on any other points.
  8. Huge commotion may affect neighboring class rooms.
  9. Day by day our confidence level between us and them will increase.
  10. Sensitive matters can also be discussed with them.

Objective

  1. Masculine predominant discussions can be started with simple activities having images of the body.
  2. Body Image, influence of culture and market force, discussion about media.

Process

Obligations recall exercise (10 Minutes)

Make 2 groups, Start discussion with the groups from below question on body images - “In case god has blessed you with 3 wishes and asked you if option is given to change 3 body parts and organs , which are your considerations?”

Kishoris response to be written down, it is compulsory to have a female/lady facilitator this activity.

During this activity connect Laptop, Projector & Speakers and keep them ready. (25 minutes)

After this group activity discussions will continue in the classroom. Group of pictures of actresses from different period will be shown to Kishoris. Make Kishoris talk about these actresses’ skin color, hair, height, body shape, clothes, face etc. and identify similarities in them. Later ask them what they felt about this. (10 Minutes)

After this conversation shown them advertisements. These advertisements are about following-

  • Shampoo
  • Hair straighter
  • Face cream
  • Eye liner
  • Lipstick
  • Lip balm
  • Moisturiser
  • Perfume powder / talc
  • Nail polish
  • Sandals / Slippers
  • Weight reducing tablets
  • Hair removal razor

After every display discuss about advertisement, person’s skin color in it, hair, height, body shape, clothes, face etc. and ask about those. While you display last advertisement by then all Kishoris should able to identify everything.

  • Write down the observations (25 minutes)
  • Ask “if these advertisements are made for men, how would they look?”
  • In the end mention that on coming weeks let us discuss about “What these advertisements are talking about and what actresses are saying about these?” While watching television at home observe advertisements, serial episodes and Tik-Tok videos. Notice the different personalities in those. (10 minutes)
  • With this we close the conversation.
