Refraction of light
Estimated Time
8 min
Materials/ Resources needed
- Beaker,
- water,
- glass slab,
- pins,

- bottle,
- coin
Prerequisites/Instructions, if any
Handle glass apparatus carefully
Multimedia resources
Refraction is the bending of a wave when it enters a medium where its speed is different. The refraction of light when it passes from a fast medium to a slow medium bends the light ray toward the normal to the boundary between the two media.
Refraction is responsible for image formation by lenses and the eye.

Process (How to do the activity)
- Take a beaker containing water. Immerse a measuring scale in it in oblique manner. Now observe the scale inside as well as outside the water.
- Take an empty glass cup. Place a coin in it and observe. Now ask the student to move backward till the coin becomes invisible. Now mark the position of the student. Now slowly pour water without disturbing the coin and ask student whether the coin is visible.
- Take a glass slab and place it on a white paper. Mark the edges. Now pass a beam of laser through one of its faces obliquely.Observe the path of the light.
Developmental Questions (What discussion questions)
- What did you observe in activity 1?
- How does the scale appear inside water?
- Give few more incidences in your daily life where you find this phenomenon?
- when you jump to a swimming pool you should have a knowledge of this phenomenon. Why?
Evaluation (Questions for assessment of the child)
