Notes for teachers
Transport systems in India can be very interesting to learn about. Teachers can bring information about the history of Indian transport systems to make class interesting and lively. For eg. Indian Railways began in 1853 when British introduced Railways to India. Also discussing about why transport systems were introduced, (the Britishers were not interested in development of India, as much as transporting their goods and defence equipment/people). See short video on history of transport!!
A discussion on why different modes of transport are needed (how they may be complementing one another) may also give a holistic picture to learners. While rail can support mass transportation of both people and goods, and for long distances, air travel is for quick transport of people and select cargo items only. Rail transport can reach final destination which other modes cannot. (this is suggested as an activity.

The chapter does not discuss Indian Railways, which is the largest railway network in the world. Indian Railways is the worlds ninth largest employer. In 2013-14, IR carried 8,425 million passengers annually or more than 23 million passengers daily (roughly half of which were suburban passengers (source Wikipedia)
The chapter contains useful information, it can add 'understanding/application' ideas with the content. For eg. instead of mentioning that 'Bombay port is called the Gateway of India', we can discuss why Bombay port is called the Gateway of India? (Since it is an important port and a natural harbour through which there was a significant movement of people as well as goods for several hundred years, it is called the Gateway of India. There is also a small arch constructed near the harbour, which is called the Gateway of India
