Because of this impatience shown in teaching children how to write numbers, not enough attention is paid on developing the interlinkages between number names (say seven), quantity (the amount corresponding to seven) and symbols (7 representing seven). This is perhaps a reason why children write incorrect numbers. Since they do not sufficiently understand the concept of place value, they often make mistakes while writing two and three digit numbers. For example, writing 65 instead of 56. The reason could be that children know that fifty six is a combination of 5 and 6 but do not understand the sequence in which these digits should be written to form 56. Which means that they do not understand the concept of place value. All textbooks suggest that identification of numbers is essential before introducing writing of numbers. Intense work should be done on reciting number names and identification of number symbols. Only after this, should we move gradually towards writing of numbers.
