Summary

In the previous module, adolescent girls (hereafter referred to as Kishoris) have identified their concerns and realized that these are problems of all Kishoris. In this module, we present these problems as role plays. Then, we have group discussions on why and in what age these problems tend to occur frequently. The role plays would be based only on the problems discussed by the Kishoris.

Assumptions

• The problem of Kishoris has been identified in the second module

• The problems of adolescence have not been expressed completely

• Since videos were played in the previous weeks, there could be a feeling that videos would be played this week as well

• Since the ಸುರುಳಿ (please translate or contextualise) activity has been performed in the last week, there is no need to elaborate on the same

• Refrain from using charts in this module – since it has been used in the last activity and could feel repetitive

• Since this is the third module, the assumption is that we have been visiting the school for about two months now and that we know a little about the background of the Kishoris – the difficulties at home, their quarrels at home, household chores and their difficulty in wearing coloured clothes.

• The school may not be responding to their backgrounds and needs

• Since there has been a gap between previous sessions and this one, there should be an effort to bring enthusiasm amongst the Kishoris, by recollecting earlier sessions

• Since there has been a group outing in the previous weeks, there could be an expectation of a similar outing

Objective

To enable Kishoris to define and explain adolescence

Process

The topics discussed in this module are relevant for the discussions in the future weeks as well. Hence this module is planned to be conducted over two weeks. This means you have 160 minutes to cover this module.

Forming Groups 20 mins

• Form three groups

• To form these groups, the Kishoris select sketch pens one by one. The three facilitators pre-plan and select one sketch pen each

The colors in each group are as follows:

• Parrot Green, Green, Blue, Sky Blue

• Red, Rose Pink, Brown, Orange

• Yellow, ಬಾದಾಮಿ, Violet, Black

The role play would be based on the discussions with the Kishoris in the previous weeks. Here, it has been deliberately planned that the male roles would be played by female facilitators and vice versa.

Role Play 1: Beeeeaaaau…..ty!

Characters

Monisha – Kishori

Two Rowdy Boys

Monisha is walking on the street. Two rowdy boys ogle at her at tease her calling out “Beauty….Monisha!”

Depending on the time available, dialogues could be scripted for the boys – which conveys the message that they are rowdy boys.

Role Play 2: The Bus 2 mins

Characters

Shreya, Monisha – Kishoris

A Bus Conductor

A Passenger

Shreya and Monisha are travelling in a bus. The conductor deliberately makes physical contact while giving them tickets. A male passenger is observing all these. When the conductor asks him to go to the back of the bus, the passenger deliberately brushes against the Kishoris and stamps their feet.

The conversation should be scripted according to the situation. It is better if the Kishoris’ conversation is centred around their school life. The conductor could convey his irritation about school-going children in the bus.

Role Play 3: Kishori….is it a Yes?? 5 mins

Characters

Monisha – Kishori

Her Mother

Her Father

Groom

Monisha is studying. Her Mother comes to her and says “Monisha, get ready. The boy is here to see you. Prepare some coffee and serve him”

Monisha is not willing. “I’m not ready to marry this early. I won’t serve coffee” she retorts.

“I know that Monisha. You will study well. But, please come out and serve him coffee today. We’ll speak to your Father later.” Her mother tries to convince Monisha.

Monisha reluctantly serves coffee to the groom. The groom ogles at her with desire. He accepts the alliance and leaves.

After the groom leaves, mother and daughter are whispering to each other. The father notices this and intervenes in anger, asking them what is it that they are gossiping about. Monisha shakes her head in fright. The father’s behaviour creates a fearful atmosphere at home.

Depending on the time, the role play could involve a conversation between the father and the groom. This could be about dowry and other nitty-gritties of marriage.

Role Play -4: The Small Girl 4 Mins

Characters

Shreya – Elder Kishori

Monisha – Younger Kishori

Shreya and Monisha are walking to school. They are carrying heavy school bags. Shreya complains of stomach ache.

“You’d have eaten Golgappa prepared from contaminated water…hence the stomach ache” says Monisha.

Shreya doesn’t respond.

“What is it…if not Golgappa? Is it Gobi Manchuri? How did you get so much money? Or did someone treat you?” Monisha questions her continuously.

“You are a small girl Monisha, you won’t understand” Shreya responds in irritation

Role Play – 5: Listen to the song… 4 mins

Characters

Boy

Monisha – Kishori

Sharada – Monisha’s elder sister

A boy is passing by on the street. Monisha is standing at the door of her house and listening to a song from her phone through ear phones. She keeps looking at the boy.

There is a love song playing in the background.

Sharada looks at Monisha angrily “Aren’t you ashamed to ogle at boys roaming on the street? Give me the mobile here. Go and do some house-work” She tries to snatch the phone from Monisha.

Monisha is reluctant “Let me finish listening to this song atleast…please” However, Sharada angrily pulls her inside and closes the door.

After completing these 5 exercises, the class may take some time to come to normal.

We will ask Kishoris about their opinion on this play. Some would say that the Play was very good others would say that it was excellent.

After this, we would tell them to sit in groups. Each group will have a facilitator.

The students can start the group discussion using titles of the roleplay.

These questions can be asked

1. Which role-Play did you like and why?

2. Which role did you like and why?

3. Which story did you like?

Each one of them can come and discuss about the story. If the discussion on a particular story is over then they can move on to the next story. Like this they can discuss all points.

If Kishoris do not speak anything you can use the following examples to continue the group discussion.

Ask Kishoris on “What happens in the story of a small girl? And they can talk about the story

You may ask “Don’t you think that both kishoris are of the same class and same age”? might be is the answer by Kishoris

Then why do you think that one of them is elder and the other younger? What is the connection between this and stomach ache.

You can ask opinion about each story.

If you ask “Will you sing”?” What do you think about this story? Then they can answer the following

• It was Good

• The Girl was looking at the boy more frequently

• Sister came and scolded

Like this you can ask about all stories

After this you can ask kishoris to relate themselves to any of the role from the story

You can ask this “If you see all this which role resembles you and the incidents are same to you”? and kishoris might answer the following

• Teasing

• Stamping the feet

• Stomachache

• Boy and Girl Story

So far, a week's time has passed.

Second Week’s Activities

Activities will continue in groups like the previous week. 3 pictures can be used for the next activity.

6-10 people can form a group, throw the pictures and ask them to choose pictures. Ask them to form a group of 3.

After choosing the picture inform what to be done.

We have seen different factors in small plays. We can ask “Which factor would you relate to the picture given to you”?

If you could relate then what are those? And if not why it is not related to you?

First ask about the picture of the baby.

Kishoris can say that “Baby gets stomach pain”

Ask the other 2 groups about the factors which they can relate to the picture received.

  • Kishoris can narrate all stories.

Ask what would be the age of Kishoris in the picture?

Then groups can move to the classroom.

Each facilitator can read out the factors which was received from their groups.

Main facilitator may ask “From these pictures which pictures resembles you and why?

Kishori can pick a picture and can answer the factors mentioned below.

  • Same Age
  • Same type of problems
  • Same scenarios
  • Same happened to us as in the story

Subcommittee

Facilitator can talk about different factors and these concepts will change as per the scenarios.

Last week we discussed about different problems like

  • Teasing while going from school
  • Stamping feet while travelling in a bus

Now you come to know that these issues are faced by everyone and not only you.

Last week with the help of different Role-Plays and group discussions we have identified which age group of girls face these problems.

As you have heard they are girls of your age group.

Less than 12 years can be called as childhood and 19 years and above may be called as Adulthood.

The age between 12 and 19 is called Adolescence

This age or your age is called Adolescence.

This is called as Teenage.

We can decide how we can be called in the classroom.

As you are aware there are physical, Psychological and intellectual changes which happens to a teenager. This is not only for girls but for boys also.

Physically you may grow tall, attain puberty at different ages and there can be change in voice of girls.

By looking at the physical change there can be change in the way of dressing and combing hair.

If we look at all the pictures of Yash, Darshan, Vijay we might wonder how beautiful they look? Or boys may admire the beauty of Rachitha Ram, Tamanna, Deepika Padukone.

Intellectually you start understanding few things.

Previously, we never used to understand the stories in movies now we have understanding on movies and environmental pollution too.

We can ask “Can all these changes be called as Teenage”?

Kishoris may answer “Yes”.

We can end the conversation.
