Summary

In the previous sessions, Kishoris have seen how women and men have been portrayed in the ads and interviews. Based on their own perception, how they are going to impact others has also been discussed. After identifying their status in their respective families and the reasons for that has been discussed in the previous 4 weeks and the male prominence has been understood, also how media compliments it, further discussion of the same is the objective of this module.

Objectives

  • To recollect effectively that has been discussed previously.
  • To discuss on the male prominence in Kishoris day to day life which has not been questioned and the impact of it on the men-women representation.
  • The male prominence and how the media mutually compliments it and strengthens each other, by raising the awareness about it, make them to think about the perception they have & inspire them.

Process

By enquiring about the health & general wellbeing of Kishoris we need to start our discussion.

To remind about their work and commitments.

Since after a longtime we are discussing with everyone, the below scenarios needs to be enacted and recollect the points that was discussed earlier.

The roles enacted here are based on the ads, actors/actress their interview shows presented during the previous week.

Scenario 1: One of the facilitator needs to tell the people if I stand here in a particular place then consider me as Alia Bhatt enacting about her hairstyle. “If I’m using Garnier hair shampoo then my hair grows thicker, softer and shinier. Do you also want your hair to be like that? Then use Garnier hair shampoo”. Just move to different place tell “I look beautiful, fair and slim that’s what the people say”

Why did facilitator enact like this..? Ask this question to the Kishoris.

After that ask the Kishoris if they have seen this kind of ads on TVs, yes/no..? (5 minutes)

Scenario 2: One of the facilitator can take help of volunteer girl and enact an adventurous ad and say “I’m Mahesh Babu”. Just move to different place and say “I look handsome, tall, fair and slim. Girls are crazy about me”

Why did facilitator enact like this? What was commonalities & differences in the scenarios enacted between scenario1 and scenario2? Ask this question to the Kishoris. After that ask the Kishoris if they have seen these kind of ads on TVs, yes/no..? (5 minutes)

Scenario3: One of the facilitator need to enact like holding a camera & interviewing Glamour Queen Gamana.

Faciliator1 (F1): Hello viewers today we’ve with us the Glamour Queen Gamana, come & join us. Let’s talk & spend some time with her. Hello madam.. Welcome to our show.. How are you?

Gamana: I’m doing great (with lot of enthusiasm). Just now “Kissing Khiladigalu” shooting has been completed. So am I’m excited.

F1: During ‘Kissing Khiladigalu’ shooting it seems you got engaged, is that true?

Gamana: No comments about it.

F1: Your photos with Sriram sir in Malaysia during New Year eve has been leaked and has become viral, what would you like to say about it?

Gamana: Look the entire film crew stayed together when we were in Malaysia however, the media reports of just two us staying together is false. In fact Sriram’s wife Shilpa is my close friend. I used to stay at her home whenever I visited Bengaluru. You cannot talk like this.

F1: We’ve heard cooking as one of your hobby, is it true madam?

Gamana: I love cooking. In this busy schedule cooking is like a stress buster. Whenever I have time I cook myself.

F1: What and all you would cook?

Gamana: I’m good in cooking dry items. Kebabs, Gobi, all I would prepare. If it’s baking I love it very much. If there’s anyone’s birthday at my home then I’m the one who prepares cake for them.

F1: We’ve heard if its blueberry cake you like that very much

Gamana: Oh yes… It’s my favorite.

F1: The ‘Lolipop’ song from your movie Kencha has become a super hit. It has set the heart on fire for the young men. In future as well can we expect similar thing from you?

Gamana: I’ve another appointment. We will talk sometime later

Scenario 4: One of the facilitator need to enact like holding a camera & interviewing Power Chakravarthy Kush.

F1: Hello viewers today we’ve with us Power Chakravarthy Kush, come join us. Let’s have a good chat with him. Hello sir, you’ve set yourself free for some time & have come to our show, thank you so much sir.

Kush: (Gives a big smile  )

F1: Your ‘Fighter’ movie has got released and has crossed 100 crore. How do you feel?

Kush: I would like to thank the people first. A movie being accepted by people at this range makes us extremely happy.

F1: There is an action scene shot by you in Sahara. That is really superb. How was that experience sir..?

Kush: Let me thank our stunt master Danny first. He’s India’s best stunt master. Also his team has worked very hard. I was trained here for 2-3 months & taken there. That helped me a bit.

F1: In that fighting scene we had heard your leg was swollen, yet you did the shooting.. How did you do that sir?

Kush: Yes that scene was difficult, but for a movie whatever is needed you should be able to do it. Right?

F1: When you were shooting there, here in your home the baby Power Chakravarthy had arrived.

Kush: Yes I was busy shooting there and I was disappointed that I could not be present here at that time. But when I came back here after seeing his face, everything became fine.

After that ask the Kishoris, if they have seen these kind of interviews on TVs yes/no..? What do they feel & why do they think like that so? (10 minutes)

After that is digitalized, the above table will be displayed with the help of a projector.

Asking the teenage girl “By seeing at the columns, can you find ‘me’ and tell us what you feel?”

By the above discussion – with the help of “circle of influence chart”, deciding who in the family has the highest authority.

As you can see the house which has more number males will give them more authority.

In case if they are not in the house, females will have more authority.

“Why is this so?” – discussing this with the teenage girl.

Here we can distinguish and show them through the game of ‘snake and ladder’.

Discussing the below topics:

By patriarchy:

  • How to teenage girls and boys get influenced. (The point which says the problem is not just with me)
  • How different it will be if teenage boys take up the recording activity.

Example:

  • They don’t allow us to study, We have to work, more than studies we have to learn the outside work ( but they don’t have to do any work at home, in authority they dominate, elder and younger sister and mother, there is no time constraints)
  • While going back from school to home, if they don’t mingle with boys – they are teased, teasing them if they don’t provoke the girls etc. their color, height, money in the hands, making younger guys as their goons, learning bad habits and thinking that it is cool (thinking that whatever they do, they can hide it from Scholl and college or even if someone gets to know, thinking that it doesn’t matter.
  • In Scholl they are given more physical punishments. They are not taught patiently if they don’t understand any topic. In schools they are given more physical activities.(by doing multiple work at schools or even if he is a fool- thinking he will be able to make a girl to fall for him with his bike or styles
  • In what age will girls get such situation?
  • A distinguish gap between a Boy and a Man.
  • Physical – Moustache, beard, change in voice and Hair.
  • Mental- pleasing girls, girls have to listen to me, all those who are at home should listen to me.
  • Ethical- I know my future, and hence I will learn the skills required.

In media ads they prioritize men more than women.

When we see interviews only this factors are seen

By seeing all this we can say teenage boys and girls have their own problems. Knowing male dominance is important. ( we should tell them not to discuss this in the house.) (20 mins)

We will see how this will change our situations and scenarios and we will discuss the same next week.
