Concept # 1 Gold as a natural resource
Learning objectives
- To understand how a natural resource is identified for commercial uses
- To understand how gold is obtained from the mines
- To understand how an ecosystem gets modified by the process of gold mining
- To understand the idea of depletion of a natural resource caused by extensive extraction of the resource
- To understand gold as an exhaustible and non renewable resource
- To understand the environmental and ecosystem issues with gold mining
Notes for teachers
These are short notes that the teacher wants to share about the concept, any locally relevant information, specific instructions on what kind of methodology used and common misconceptions/mistakes.
Activity No # 1 Familiarising with the story of Kolar Gold Fields
- Estimated Time: 1 class unit
- Materials/ Resources needed: Book,pen
- Prerequisites/Instructions, if any:It will be helpful if the teacher has good understanding of Kolar gold fields, how and in what context it was formed, how is the mining being done, how the district ecosystem changed as mining started and the associated economic changes, environmental and ecosystem issue of gold mining etc. She could go through the articles published on the issues of KGF mining and how it was closed down on Economic and Political weekly. The documentary ‘ After the Gold’ by Janaki Nair is worth watching for this purpose.
- Multimedia resources
- Website interactives/ links/ simulations
- Process (How to do the activity):
The teacher introduces the story of Kolar Gold Fields to the students and a discussion thereafter based on the inquiries from the students.
- Developmental Questions (What discussion questions):
- In what form is gold available on earth?
- How do we get gold from the mine?
- How much time and labour does it take? What is the infrastructure needed?
- What is gold used for?
- What are the issues with gold mining? Will it affect the living things around?
- Is gold exhaustible and can it be renewed?
- Can gold mines be found everywhere?
- What are the conditions where gold is available on earth?
- Evaluation (Questions for assessment of the child)

Activity No # 1 A discussion with students about Coorg oranges
- Estimated Time: 1 class unit
- Materials/ Resources needed: Book,pen
- Prerequisites/Instructions, if any:It will be useful to understand the ecological or environmental factors of Coorg which makes the oranges unique in its own way. Also, the specialty of the oranges, how is an ecosystem formed to produce and market the oranges, issues faced by the farmers, plan to grow Nagpur oranges etc.

- Website interactives/ links/ simulations
- Process (How to do the activity): Discuss with students about the Coorg oranges and how they have been geographically identified.
- Developmental Questions (What discussion questions):
- What is the specialty of Coorg oranges?
- What is special about Coorg and its environmental factors which make Coorg oranges different?
- Can Coorg oranges be grown in other regions? If then what kind of regions could they be grown?
- Identify other resources and their environmental peculiarities.
