Activity No # 1 - CREATION OF A RAINBOW IN A GLASS

Materials/ Resources needed

  1. 5 Glass Beakers
  2. 4 Food Colours ( Red, Yellow, Green , Blue) Optional -(Ujjala for Blue)
  3. Sugar
  4. Water
  5. spoons
  6. Spirit Lamp
  7. Tripod Stand

Process (How to do the activity)

STEP 1: Add 1 tablespoon of sugar to the first glass, 2 tablespoons of sugar to the second glass, 3 tablespoons of sugar to the third glass, 4 tablespoons of sugar to the fourth glass. Keep the fifth glass empty.
STEP 2:- Add 2 tablespoons of water to each of the first 4 glasses. Stir each solution and heat it till sugar dissolves.
STEP 3:- Add 2-3 drops of red food coloring to the first glass, Add yellow food coloring to the second glass, green food coloring to the third glass, and blue food coloring to the fourth glass. Stir each solution.
STEP 4:- Fill the last glass about one-fourth full of the blue sugar solution. Carefully layer some green sugar solution above the blue liquid. Do this by inverting a spoon in the glass Similarly add the Yellow layer and finish it with the red solution.

DISCUSSION:- You can use the rainbow project as a decoration or to teach principles of density, concentration, refraction, dispersion etc.
