Summary

Over the previous weeks, kishoris have learnt what patriarchy is and discussed how it gives men higher privileges. They have understood the possibilities of overcoming patriarchy through scenes from movies and through people in their own lives too. This week, by means of viewing movie scenes and analyzing them, kishoris will speak about overcoming patriarchy. Having these discussions by using funny videos will help effectively reach out to kishoris.

Assumptions

  1. Some kishoris may appear naughty when in a group, but many amongst them lack self-confidence.
  2. A few kishoris have voluntarily started sharing their opinions. It is required to amplify their voices and keep a tab on those who are being disruptive in a discussion.
  3. When you feel the level of confidence between us and the kishoris has gone up through the day, it is time to discuss delicate matters with them.
  4. Kishoris might be looking discouraged because the previous class teacher might have chided them.
  5. They have understood what Patriarchy is.
  6. Through the Venn diagram activity, kishoris have understood who all have how much rights among them.
  7. A few kishoris might not understand audio/video being shown in any language other than Kannada and due to this they might hesitate to participate in the discussions.
  8. Kishoris might be hesitant to read and write and that is the reason they do not volunteer for these activities.
  9. In the previous week, when they heard about those who have crossed the barriers of patriarchy, apart from one none of the kishoris spoke.
  10. The teacher from the previous class may take up extra time.
  11. Kishoris might remember the role play activity done during the “Teenage Interpretation” module.

Objective

To begin discussions around overcoming patriarchal barriers.

Process

  1. Start our discussion with kishoris greeting each other and speaking about their lives and obligations.
  2. Revise the topics discussed in the last week - 10 minutes
  3. After this, show them the scenes from the Telegu movie “Jamba lakidi pamba”.
  4. The movie’s story revolves around exchange of male and female gender roles.
  5. After showing every scene, ask kishoris what they saw in the scene, what were the male and female characters doing. The answers will be noted on a chart by a facilitator.
  6. After showing the movie scenes, discuss about the similarity and dissimilarity between the video and the society.

Continue the discussion by asking the following questions:

  • Where is the place for males in a patriarchal society? Where was it in the scene?
  • Who has the authority?
  • Do you agree with these?

If we look closely at the movie scenes and what you said, such things need to be looked at as comedy and will not happen in real life. Hence, it is important to understand the impact of patriarchy. If one understands this, one can overcome patriarchy. Centered around the elements of what kishoris spoke, the dialogue must continue.

After this, ask the kishoris if they know anyone who has overcome patriarchy.

After listening to their responses, let them know that in the coming weeks they will be learning more about different ways to overcome patriarchy.
